Haru Scarf/ Haru sjaal Free pattern in English (US and UK) and Nederlands

Oh what a wonderful holiday we had; we spent whole days in our pyjamas together, we had great food and we thoroughly enjoyed each others company, But as they say, all good things come to an end and so tomorrow it will be time for Lucy to go back to school and everything will be back to normal.

I wanted to make her a new scarf and thought of the ones I had seen in the shop with an opening in it to make it easier to put on. It makes things a lot easier for little ones. They already have so much to deal with, hats, scarfs, gloves,  backpacks, lunchbags. I came up with this scarf which fits my 4 year old daughter nicely and I am sharing it with you for free!

This pattern is written in English (US and UK) en Scroll naar beneden voor het Nederlandse patroon.

Yarn used:  Marriner Smooth Touch Cotton Look DK 100g (About 1 1/2 ball)
Side note: This yarn is a treat to work with, it looks and feels like cotton but is actually acrylic. Lucy chose it herself when we were in the shop and I am glad she did!
Hook used: 4 MM  (G US size)

Stitches used:
DC = Double crochet (TR = Treble)
SC = Single crochet (DC = Double crochet)
DC3TOG = Double crochet 3 together (TR3TOG = Treble 3 together)- This is basically 3 DC's/TR's that you don't finish, here is how to do it :*Yarn over and insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops x 3.
You should now have 4 loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through all 4 loops.
I will also refer to DC3TOG andTR3TOG as  Cluster in the pattern.

This pattern is written in US terms. I have put UK terms in this colour.

Chain 152

1: DC (TR) in the fourth CH from the hook and in every other chain across ( 150 DC's / TR's )

2: CH 3 (Counts as 1 DC/TR) * Work DC3TOG(TR3TOG) (see instructions above) in the next stitch, CH 1, Skip 1 stitch. Repeat from * until you have only the CH 3 left (the start of your previous row) make another DC3TOG(TR3TOG)cluster in the top of the CH 3. (75 DC3TOG/TR3TOG clusters)

3. CH 3 (Counts as 1 DC/TR) skip the first cluster  (the one your CH 3 is on top of), * Make a DC3TOG/TR3TOG in the CH 1 space, CH 1, Skip the next cluster . Repeat from * until you have one cluster and the starting CH 3 left, - CH 1, skip cluster and make DC3TOG/TR3TOG  in the top of the CH 3.

4. CH 1 ( Does not count as SC/DC) Make a SC/DC in every cluster and CH 1 space across. - after you made a SC/DC in the last cluster, you'll have the CH 3 left, make a SC/DC in the top of that CH 3 as well. (150 SC's/ DC's)

5. CH1 (Does not count as SC/DC) Make a SC/DC in the first and every stitch across (150 SC's/DC's)

6. CH 3 (Counts as 1 DC/TR) * Make 2 DC's/TR's in the next (second) stitch, Skip 1 stitch. Repeat from * until you have 1 stitch left. Make 1 DC/TR in that last stitch.

7. CH 3 ( Counts as 1 DC/TR ) * Make 2 DC's/TR's in between the 2 DC's/TR's you made in the previous row, skip  2 DC's/TR's. Repeat from * across untill you have 3 DC's/TR's left, Make 2 DC's/TR's in between the next 2 DC's/TR's, make a DC/TR in the top of CH 3.

8. CH 1 (Does not count as 1 SC/DC) , Make a SC/DC in the first 97 Stitches, CH 20, Skip 20 Stitches, SC/DC in the remaining 33 stitches. This is where we are creating the opening as seen on the photo below.

9. CH 1 (Does not count as 1 SC/DC) Make a SC/DC in the first 33 stitches, Working in the 20 chains make 20 SC's/DC's, make a SC/DC in the remaining 97 stitches.

10.  CH 3 (Counts as 1 DC/TR) * Make 2 DC's/TR's in the next (second) stitch, Skip 1 stitch. Repeat from * until you have 1 stitch left. Make 1 DC/TR in that last stitch.

12. CH 1 ( does not count as 1 SC/DC) Make a SC/DC in the first and every other stitch across (150 Stitches)

13. CH 1 ( does not count as 1 SC/DC) Make a SC/DC in the first and every other stitch across (150 Stitches)

14: CH 3 (Counts as 1 DC/TR) * Work DC3TOG(TR3TOG) (see instructions above) in the next stitch, CH 1, Skip 1 stitch. Repeat from * until you have only the CH 3 left (the start of your previous row) make another DC3TOG(TR3TOG)cluster in the top of the CH 3. (75 DC3TOG/TR3TOG clusters)

15: CH 3 (Counts as 1 DC/TR) skip the first cluster  (the one your CH 3 is on top of), * Make a DC3TOG/TR3TOG in the CH 1 space, CH 1, Skip the next cluster . Repeat from * until you have one cluster and the starting CH 3 left, - CH 1, skip cluster and make DC3TOG/TR3TOG  in the top of the CH 3.

16. CH 3 (Counts as 1 DC/TR) Make a DC/TR in every cluster and in every CH 1 space across - After you made a DC/TR in the last cluster you have 3 CH left, make a DC/TR in the top of that CH 3 (150 DC's/TR's)

17. In this row we are working SC/DC stitches all around the edges to finish it off nicely.
CH 1 (does not count as SC/DC) Rotate your work clockwise so you'll be working along the short side of the scarf. Make 2 SC's/DC's around each DC/TR stitch , CH 3 and Cluster - to make the SC's/DC's in the cluster you just insert the hook in the most outside stitch in the cluster, make 1 SC/DC around each of the SC's/DC'sI ended up with 26 stitches on the short side.
- Now we rotate the work again to work in the bottom of the scarf, make 2 SC's/DC's in the first stitch, make one SC/DC in every stitch across until you have 1 stitch left, make 2 stitches in the last stitch
- Rotate your work to work into the small side again and repeat what we did at the first short side
- Rotate to do the top : make 2 SC's/DC's in the first , then 1 in all the other ones and then 3 in the last stitch. ( 3 in the last stitch if you want to continue and make the bobble border, otherwise it really doesn't matter what stitch count you have now )

Now if you are happy with your scarf as it is now, finish off and work away loose ends, but if you, like mine want the bobble edge I'll have to redirect you to THIS Blog. I made sure you have the stitch count ready to start making it, but it does take a couple hours longer to make this border.

Nederlands Patroon:

Garen :  Marriner Smooth Touch Cotton Look DK 100g (ongeveer 1 1/2 bol)
